Pulse Oximetry Testing

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT PULSE OXIMETRY STUDIES

What is the reason for a nocturnal pulse oximetry study?

The main reason for a night time pulse ox test is to determine your oxygen needs. If currently on oxygen the test can be done to ensure you are using the correct amount of oxygen.

What equipment is involved with a pulse oximetry test?

A simple wrist watch style monitor is worn at night along with a finger pulse ox probe. There are no extra wires, and no extra devices to keep you up all night.

Will my insurance / Medicare / Medicaid cover the cost of this study?

We do not currently work with any insurance companies. The test can be submitted to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. We provide our services and products at a very competitive rate that often saves our customers time and money rather than going the lengthy and costly insurance route.

Will my insurance provider accept this test as indication for treatment?

Always check first with your insurance carrier to inquire about acceptable diagnostic tests first. This test is a non-invasive simple study and is generally accepted.

What causes low blood oxygen during sleep?

There are several potential reasons for a decrease in oxygen levels at night. The main reasons all focus on respiratory related issues including, COPD, Asthma, Emphysema, Obstructive and Central sleep apnea to name a few.

Do I need a prescription or referral to order this pulse oximetry test?

No, you can simply give us a call and we will send you the test with no need for a referral and or prescription.

Can I use the results of this pulse oximetry study to receive supplemental oxygen?

Yes, upon receiving your test results if there is a clear indication of low oxygen levels you should be able to consult with your physician to determine the proper plan to receive supplemental oxygen.

Who will tell me if the results of the study are normal, or abnormal?

We recommend speaking with your health care provider for consultation. As there could be many potential reasonings why a test may be abnormal. Your personal Physician will be able to help determine your exact requirements.

What does the pulse oximetry test measure?

The test records your continuous heart rate, and your SPO2 levels (oxygen levels)

What are normal oxygen levels?

Normal oxygen levels are generally 92% or greater.

Can I just use a normal pulse ox I bought from the store?

No, we use a special medical grade, and approved device that is made specifically for recording your data and measuring your results. The pulse ox machines in the stores do not provide this.

What equipment is involved with a pulse oximetry test?

A simple wrist watch style monitor is worn at night along with a finger pulse ox probe. There are no extra wires, and no extra devices to keep you up all night.

Will a night time pulse ox study determine if I have sleep apnea?

No, the only way to diagnose sleep apnea is done by a sleep study, which we also provide.

What is the cost for this study?

The cost is $99.00 per study.

Do you know your oxygen levels?

In addition to testing your oxygen needs at night with a nocturnal pulse oximetry study we can also do testing during the day while you are at rest and with exercise. This is highly recommended if you are considering purchasing a portable oxygen concentrator like a Inogen as they work differently than traditional oxygen concentrators and tanks. Contact us if you would like to be evaluated for a small portable concentrator. We have a good selection of POCs and can order any model you'd like.

If you are concerned about if you are getting enough oxygen or if you may need oxygen, give us a call now! Do not wait until it is too late. Lack of proper oxygen to the body can have serious negative side effects!

Capnography Testing

Additional Information

In addition to oximetry we also offer overnight capnography testing. Capnography is the monitoring of the exhaled CO2 in the respiratory gases. Its a monitoring tool for use in assessing adequate ventilation. Testing of the ETCO2 coupled with oximetry gives you a nice overview of your respiratory status by reporting CO2 level, oxygen saturation, heart rate and respiratory rate. It is a beneficial tool for monitoring patients that may require ventilatory assistance with a bilevel (bipap) device or Trilogy (ventilator)
